About Health Programs
Health Canada is working with First Nations people and Inuit to improve their health. Together with First Nations and Inuit organizations and communities, they carry out many activities aimed at helping people stay healthy, and prevent chronic and contagious diseases.

Diabetes
- Raise awareness of diabetes, risk factors and the value of healthy lifestyle practices.
- Support the development of a culturally appropriate approach to care and treatment, diabetes prevention and health promotion programs, and lifestyle support programs.
- Build capacity, linkages and infrastructure for all components of the ADI in First Nation and Inuit communities.
- Promote effective self-management of diabetes.
- Coordinate with other community based programming specifically First Nations and Inuit Home and Community Care program.

Brighter Futures
- The Brighter Futures program is a community-based health promotion and ill-health prevention program for First Nations and Inuit communities.
- The program typically, promotes health and prevents ill-health through learning-related activities that strive to increase awareness, change attitudes, build knowledge and enhance skills.
- A holistic approach to support First Nations and Inuit individuals, families and communities, to meet the needs of the community.

Headstart Program
The program is based on caring, creativity and pride following the knowledge of traditional community beliefs, within a holistic and safe environment.
The primary goal of this initiative: Demonstrate locally controlled and locally designed early intervention strategies that can provide First Nations preschool children with a positive sense of themselves. Instilling a desire for learning and receiving opportunities to develop fully and successfully as young people.

Home & Community Care Program
Objective
Health Canada works with First Nations and Inuit communities in developing comprehensive home and community care services that respect traditional, holistic and contemporary approaches to healing and wellness.
The goal is to assist people who have chronic and acute illnesses and receive the care they need in their home or community.
Program Components
- Nursing care
- Personal care such as bathing and foot care
- Home support such as meal preparation
In-home respite care, that is, caring for someone while family members have a rest.
