Health Canada is working with First Nations people and Inuit to improve their health. Together with First Nations and Inuit organizations and communities, they carry out many activities aimed at helping people stay healthy, and prevent chronic and contagious diseases.

Brighter Futures

The Brighter Futures program is a community-based health promotion and ill-health prevention program for First Nations and Inuit communities.

The program typically, promotes health and prevents ill-health through learning-related activities that strive to increase awareness, change attitudes, build knowledge and enhance skills.

Headstart Program

The program is based on caring, creativity and pride following from the knowledge of the traditional community beliefs, within a holistic and safe environment.

The primary goal of this initiative is to demonstrate that locally controlled and designed early intervention strategies can provide Aboriginal preschool children with a positive sense of themselves, a desire for learning and opportunities to develop fully and successfully as young people.

Home & Community Care Program:

Health Canada works with First Nations and Inuit communities in developing comprehensive home and community care services that respect traditional, holistic and contemporary approaches to healing and wellness.

The goal is to assist people who have chronic and acute illnesses receive the care they need in their home or community.
Program Components:

personal care such as bathing and foot care

home support such as meal preparation

in-home respite care, that is, caring for someone while family members have a rest.
